The Right Decision


For Dawson Rutter, president and founder of Commonwealth Worldwide (Also known as Commonwealth Limo), the drive to excellence began behind the wheel of a taxi. That is where he saw first-hand how the quality of customer service could make or break a business.

After ten years of driving and dispatching taxis, the temptation of driving an air-conditioned vehicle in the heat of the summer lured him to the limousine business. Just a month into his new position as a chauffeur, Rutter jumped at the opportunity to fill in for the vacationing operations manager. The fill-in job soon became a fulltime position, and Rutter quickly acquired the driving, chauffeuring, dispatching and operations experience that enabled him to envision a luxury transportation service that surpassed all of his previous transportation experiences.

In 1982, Rutter used his savings to purchase a single vehicle, launching Commonwealth Worldwide. With a clear vision of providing the excellence that was missing in the industry, Rutter built the values of accountability, communication, exceptional customer care, and professionalism into the backbone of his organization.

His vision and values paid off, and just a year later, in 1983, Commonwealth Worldwide's exceptional service earned it a Best of Boston award from Boston magazine, which caused business to triple in just one month. Commonwealth Worldwide continued to grow steadily through 2002, despite the September 11 tragedy that hurt most of the transportation and hospitality industry.

The company was first designated the Official Chauffeured Transportation Company of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops in 2003. Commonwealth and the Boston Symphony Orchestra recently finalized a new, expanded multi-year agreement, extending Commonwealth Worldwide's status as the Official Chauffeured Transportation of the BSO and Boston Pops through the 2008-09 season.

Commonwealth Worldwide also reached a milestone in 2003 when it was named one of the top 10 largest limousine networks in the United States by Limousine Digest magazine.

In July 2004, Rutter expanded Commonwealth Worldwide's operations into the affluent Greater New York market. Due to the enormous growth in business by spring of 2005, Commonwealth was forced to move its operations to a new 20,000 sq. ft. garage and offices. In addition, in 2004 Commonwealth Worldwide was awarded its third Best of Boston award from Boston magazine.

In 2005, Commonwealth was named the number one emerging company to watch by Limousine & Chauffeured Transportation magazine (June 2005: 79).

In April 2006, Commonwealth Worldwide was named for the third consecutive year on the ICIC - Inc. Magazine list of the 100 fastest growing inner-city companies in the U.S.
